Dynamic equipment misalignment

Dynamic equipment misalignment is one of the main reasons of unscheduled shutdowns, trouble-free operation time reduction and serious breakdowns. The misalignment can occur as a result of an error or negligence of service personnel during assembling and in the course of dynamic machine operation (turbines, compressors, pumps, exhausters, mills, fans, gearboxes). We recommend to measure the vibration level with the simple vibration meters BALTECH VP Series every 2-4 weeks. The increased axial vibration indicates the angular misalignment.

The misalignment occurs when the rotational centers of two rotating shafts are not collinear. In practice, the misalignment occurs when the alignment tolerances are not observed. There are two types of misalignment: angular misalignment and offset. As a rule, most machine misalignments are a combination of the angular misalignment and offset. The alignment procedure is determination and adjustment of two connected machines (e.g. a motor and a pump), so that the rotational centers of the shafts are collinear and in tolerance. The alignment tolerances can be specified by the equipment manufacture. You can also use the international alignment standards.

To ensure fast and precise alignment we recommend using the electromechanical alignment system BALTECH SA-4300. The advantage of this system is that it allows selecting between two alignment methods: rim and face and reverse indicator method. As opposed to laser systems, the electromechanical alignment system BALTECH SA-4300 can be used outdoors at a negative temperature, it doesn’t require any explosion protection certification and calibration. The advantage is that the system price is low while it has more functions than some expensive alignment devices. The system has a memory for up to 1000 alignment reports.

The electromechanical alignment system BALTECH SA-4300 makes it possible to calculate the required movements of feet in a vertical and horizontal direction. The calculation is performed based on the machine linear dimensions and on the results of the shaft mutual displacements, measured during their simultaneous cranking. The shaft mutual displacements are measured by the digital measurement units that are installed on the shafts with the special fixtures: one measurement unit is mounted on the moveable machine (e.g. electric motor) and another one is mounted on the stationary machine (e.g. gearbox, pump, etc.). Then the measurement units are connected to the display unit. Readings of the measurement units are transferred to the display unit in the form of a digital signal. The calculation of the required feet movements is shown on the display unit screen. After that the alignment is performed. The alignment results are saved in the device memory. We recommend to transfer the reports into PC and print them via the BALTECH Expert software.

BALTECH SA – 4300 consists of a set of mounting fixtures, measurement units and a display unit. The set of fixtures contains the indicator fixture to assemble the measurement units and chain fixtures and stands to mount the measurement units on shafts. The measurement units are digital electronic devices that convert the shaft movements into a digital code. The measurement units are powered from SR44.

The display unit consists of a single-chip microcontroller with the power regulating circuits, color LCD 320 x 240 pixels, two lithium iron phosphate batteries (LiFePO 4) and nonvolatile memory. The display unit has a robust aluminum housing (IP 65) with a film keyboard on the front panel. The lithium iron phosphate batteries (LiFePO 4) are inside the housing. Data interchange between the display unit and PC is conducted via USB interface.
