Gearbox (mechanical) is a machine that transmits and converts the torque moment, with one or more mechanical transmissions.
Due to the flexibility the gearboxes are widely used in carrying and lifting machines, harvesting equipment, metallurgical and coal equipment, in power engineering, machine industry, building industry, petroleum and gas industry, agricultural and process industries.
Detection of the gearbox defects is rather difficult and long process. The diagnostics equipment used by specialists to monitor and detect the reason of the increased vibration of gearboxes is enough complicated and contains almost all the spectral methods of the vibration analysis.
What can be the reason of the increased vibration level in the gearboxes? Improper shaft alignment! The main purpose of the shaft alignment is to adjust the electric motor so that its shaft rotational center is collinear with the gearbox rotational center with the accuracy 0.02-0.05 mm. As a rule, the gearbox is taken as a stationary machine in the electric motor. So why can the shaft misalignment be a root cause of the increased vibration level and the gearbox failure? As is known, even small misalignment causes forces that negatively influence bearings, seals, half coupling and oil. As for the gearboxes, the key reason of their failure is lack of lubricant. Therefore it is very important to perform the periodical check alignment, as wear and premature failure of seals can lead to oil loss and gearbox overheating.
To ensure reliable and long operation of the gearboxes BALTECH recommends using the modern alignment system BALTECH SA-4300. This mechanical alignment system launched in 2013 year allows performing fast and accurate gearbox alignment. It can perform horizontal and vertical shaft alignment, machine train alignment and soft foot detection.
The gearbox is always a part of a machine train which consists of at least three machines. Usually in such machine trains the gearbox is the heaviest machine, and all other components are installed relative to the gearbox. The mechanical shaft alignment system BALTECH SA-4300 calculates the optimal movement of the machines in the machine train relative to the gearbox which considerably speeds up the alignment procedure.
